When volleyball was first invented it was played by men. They wore very conservative clothes, like a long sleeved shirt, pants that ran past the knee, and leather shoes. However while containing their conservative values their uniform often grew uncomfortable because of their tight clothing and heavy shoes.
The evolution of the volleyball uniform has progressed over the years to not only make players look better, but to help with performance aspects as well. It will be interesting to see what volleyball uniforms (from head to toe) look like in 10 or even 20 years from now. We saw a glimpse of where Nebraska volleyball may be going in the future.

It wasn’t until 1916 that the first volleyball uniforms appeared in schools and colleges across the United States. The introduction of “formal” uniforms helped the sport to grow in popularity. It wasn’t long until volleyball quickly became one of the most popular activities for people of all ages. 1928 saw the very first U.S. Open volleyball tournament.
Modern style started to transfer into how volleyball uniforms evolved. When materials and fits started to be tighter, players and coaches realized this helped the performance of the players. From the 1980s until today , jerseys and short shave become tighter and the material used to create the uniforms captured the true essence of volleyball.
As soon as beach volleyball came as an event in Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. The women's uniform at that was a bikini. Thus FIVB allowed shorts in order to accommodate different countries religions and cultural requirements hence the uniforms had to be made flexiable. In the 2016 Games, several athletes choose for the modest choice.
For women beach volleyball players, the most standard athletic uniform is a bikini. And while some critics have claimed that having the women athletes play in bikinis, while men more commonly play in shorts and tank tops, is outdated and even sexist, others feel that the sport is played in bikinis because they are simply the best outfit for the task.

The FIVB (Federation International de Volleyball) has relatively strict regulations for uniforms’ colors, markings, shapes, and specific measurements. Women Beach Volleyball players do actually have the choice of a bikini or a one-piece swimsuit, according to the 2004 edition of the Players’ Uniforms Guidelines for Olympic Games.
